The manufacturing process at the new facility will employ innovative technologies and the strictest quality standards. Every stage has been carefully designed to ensure maximum accuracy and reliability of the products manufactured. All production stages will be automated, with the use of human resources minimized.

The production of high-precision test strips will be based on carefully selected specialized components. These include bioactive enzymes and catalysts that drive key reactions, special inks ensuring precise application, high-quality membranes and hydrophilic films regulating blood flow and absorption. Adhesives ensuring the strength of the structure and plastic substrates forming the foundation of the strip are also essential components. Each element plays a unique role: the enzymes initiate the glucose oxidation process, the electrodes conduct the signal, and the hydrophilic films ensure proper distribution of the blood sample.

During the layering and assembly stage, all prepared materials will be aligned with utmost precision. Films with a selective coating direct the blood flow precisely into the reaction chamber, ensuring effective interaction with the electrodes coated with an enzyme layer.

Next, an enzyme composition will be applied to the prepared layered structure of the working electrode. It initiates the oxidation reaction of glucose in the blood sample, generating an electrochemical signal that is subsequently interpreted by the blood glucose meter to determine the exact blood sugar level. Once all functional stages have been completed, the test strips will be carefully cut to a standard size suitable for individual use. Cutting precision ensures that each strip meets the specified parameters and retains its structural integrity.

The final stage is packaging the test strips in vials containing a desiccant. This protects them from external contaminants, moisture and temperature fluctuations, ensuring that they retain their functionality and extending their shelf life.

It is also important to note that ETALON Russian Company is paying special attention to creating ideal manufacturing conditions at the new facility. A report of an adverse event dated 20 November 2024, No. NS-15615, concerning a safety issue involving the medical device “INSUPEN Disposable Pen Needles,” Registration Certificate No. FSZ 2011/09838 dated 27 April 2024, was received in the Roszdravnadzor AIS database.

In this regard, ETALON Russian Company LLC is providing a corrective action report in accordance with Appendix No. 3 to Order No. 1113n of the Ministry of Health of Russia dated 19 October 2020 (Appendix 1), as well as a medical device safety notice in accordance with Appendix No. 4 to Order No. 1113n of the Ministry of Health of Russia dated 19 October 2020, intended for users of the medical device “INSUPEN Disposable Pen Needles” (Appendix No. 2). These documents have been published on the ETALON Russian Company LLC website.

We would also like to inform you that INSUPEN Disposable Pen Needles are manufactured from high-quality materials. The manufacturing process complies with European standards and is supported by an ISO 13485-certified quality management system, as confirmed by the relevant certificate. Each batch of needles undergoes mandatory quality control before being released for circulation.

To minimize the risk of improper use and, consequently, adverse events, users must read the instructions for use. Failure to comply with storage conditions or improper or repeated use of the needles may result in deterioration of needle quality.

According to a survey conducted by the Russian Diabetes Association, patients frequently fail to comply with the recommended single-use requirement for insulin needles: patients reuse insulin needles because of an acute shortage of needles. According to public diabetes organizations, patients in the regions do not receive needles in sufficient quantities. The needles are intended for single use; reuse causes the needle to deform and become clogged. Using a deformed needle can lead to lipohypertrophy, increased pain and skin damage. A clogged needle prevents administration of the medicinal product.

Selecting the correct needle size, following the injection technique described in the instructions, and checking the integrity of the packaging and the needle itself before use makes it possible to eliminate the risks of adverse events associated with the use of the needles.

However, following identification of the adverse event, ETALON Russian Company LLC sent a request to the manufacturer to conduct an internal investigation, verify the quality of needles from lot 2204768 with an expiry date of 01 April 2027, and provide the results of the final inspection of the lot.

To minimize the risk of improper use and, consequently, adverse events, users must read the instructions for use. Failure to comply with storage conditions or improper or repeated use of the needles may result in deterioration of needle quality.

b) Initial corrective actions taken by the manufacturer:

ETALON Russian Company LLC suspended the circulation of the medical device “INSUPEN Disposable Pen Needles,” lot No. 2204768.

ETALON Russian Company LLC sent a request to the State Autonomous Healthcare Institution “Rezh Central District Hospital,” which had reported the adverse event, for the samples associated with the adverse events and detailed information about the incident (outgoing letter No. 241126-462/1 dated 27 November 2024); no response was received.

ETALON Russian Company LLC sent a request to the manufacturer to conduct an internal investigation and verify the quality of needles from lot 2204768 with an expiry date of 01 April 2027.

c) Results of the manufacturer’s final investigation analysis, for the final report:

Because the samples associated with the adverse events and detailed information about the incident were not received from the State Autonomous Healthcare Institution “Rezh Central District Hospital,” the manufacturer of the needles, Pikdare S.p.A., Italy, conducted testing on control samples from lot 2204768. A review of the production and lot-release documentation revealed no deviations either at the preliminary cannula manufacturing stage or during the subsequent needle assembly and packaging stages. In fact, none of the various inspections revealed any deviations related to the steel or the finished product. Pen needles are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9626:2016.

To complete the assessment, a breakage test was performed on control samples from lot 2204768. The test consists of subjecting the needles to a specified number of bending cycles to identify any weak points that could lead to cannula breakage, following the method required by ISO 9626:2016.

The breakage test was performed on 10 samples, in accordance with ISO 2859-1; no signs of breakage were detected in the samples.

In addition, cannula stiffness was tested on 10 other control samples from lot 2204768 in accordance with an internal procedure. The components complied with ISO 9626:2016, and the wall stiffness met the product specification.

Based on the manufacturer’s experience and the tests performed, the breakage was caused by improper use of the needles by the user. In particular, it may have resulted from:

· an incorrectly selected needle angle in relation to the skin;

· excessive force applied during the injection;

· repeated use of the needle;

· sudden movement by the patient during the injection.

The needles are intended for single use; reuse causes the needle to deform and become clogged.

Selecting the correct needle size, following the injection technique described in the instructions, and checking the integrity of the packaging and the needle itself before use makes it possible to eliminate the risks of adverse events associated with the use of the needles.

The forum on this topic was supported by the Federation Council Committees on Social Policy, Science, Education, Culture, Food Security and Environmental Management, as well as the relevant State Duma committees.

International Nurses Day is celebrated every year on 12 May.

In other words, today we have another opportunity to thank and congratulate the women working in one of the most humane professions.

World Diabetes Day is observed around the world every year on 14 November. It was established by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1991 in response to growing concern about the rising incidence of diabetes worldwide.

The date was chosen for a reason: Canadian physician and physiologist Frederick Banting was born on this day. Together with John Macleod and Charles Best, he discovered insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize.

The logo of World Diabetes Day is a blue circle. In many cultures, the circle symbolizes life and health, while the color blue represents the sky that unites all peoples.

Two main types of diabetes mellitus are currently recognized: type 1 diabetes, which is insulin-dependent and primarily affects young people under 30, and type 2 diabetes, which is non-insulin-dependent. In the latter case, insulin is produced, and by following a diet and maintaining an active lifestyle, it is often possible to keep blood sugar levels within the normal range for a considerable period and successfully avoid complications.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 463 million people worldwide currently live with diabetes. Most of them have type 2 diabetes. At the same time, one in two people with type 2 diabetes is unaware of their condition.

According to Rosstat, approximately 4.8 million people in Russia have diabetes.

The number of new diabetes cases increases by approximately 300,000 every year.

Unfortunately, diabetes mellitus cannot be completely cured; however, it can be controlled, making it possible to live a fulfilling life!

If the risk of developing the disease is identified in time, it may be possible to prevent it. Timely diagnosis is the key to a healthy life!

From 29 to 31 May 2019, Moscow hosted the “The Health of the Nation Is the Foundation of Russia’s Prosperity” Forum at the Gostiny Dvor Exhibition Complex, with ETALON Company LLC taking part.

The forum’s theme was “The Health and Quality of Life of Citizens at the Center of the National Goals and Strategic Development Objectives of the Russian Federation for the Period up to 2024.” Its objective was to identify the best regional and sector-specific practices for their further promotion and replication.

Over the years, the “The Health of the Nation Is the Foundation of Russia’s Prosperity” Forum has embodied the idea of cooperation between the government and business. This year, more than 15 federal ministries and agencies, over 21 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, dozens of commercial organizations and non-governmental organizations took part in its preparation. The central event of this year’s forum was the plenary session entitled “The Health and Quality of Life of Citizens at the Center of the National Goals and Strategic Development Objectives of the Russian Federation for the Period up to 2024.”

Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin also acknowledged the event and sent his greetings to the forum’s participants and guests:

The Healthcare 2017 medical exhibition was held at the Expocentre Central Exhibition Complex from 4 to 8 December as part of the Russian Health Week forum. According to experts, this event was the country’s largest healthcare project of the past year.

As traditionally happens, the forum focused on current trends in the development of global and Russian medicine. In 2017, the Healthcare exhibition primarily featured medical devices for a wide range of applications.

Leading Moscow manufacturers presented new technologies, equipment samples and medical devices. Among them was the Russian company ETALON, which presented its full range of products for the supply of medical diagnostic solutions: the iCheck blood glucose meter with an updated design for the device and test strips; the MultiCare-in rapid analyzer, manufactured in Russia; tests for particularly dangerous infections; drug tests; and other products.

“The ETALON Company stand was equal in design to those of the industry’s global leaders, which attracted visitors,” said Vasily Korotkov, an employee of the Russian company ETALON.

More than 500 potential clients visited our company’s stand at the exhibition. Within two weeks following meetings held at the Healthcare exhibition, three contracts were concluded for the supply of iCheck and MultiCare-in devices, while several other contracts are under active discussion.

The exhibition provided an excellent opportunity for regional partners to meet in person and discuss prospects for further cooperation.

There is no doubt that holding large-scale events of this kind gives industry professionals an excellent opportunity to exchange experience with Russian and international colleagues.

Participation in exhibitions of this scale and communication with global market leaders is undoubtedly inspiring and encourages further development and the achievement of new heights.

Scientists at the University of California have developed a method for implanting insulin-producing cells. This discovery could help patients suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The new development could significantly improve the lives of people with type 1 diabetes. It is currently still under development and has not yet been tested in humans. If successful, the patients’ immune systems would not reject the beta cells that produce insulin.

As is known, people with type 1 diabetes need to measure their blood sugar levels regularly throughout the day and administer insulin when the readings are high. Crystal Nyitray, founder and CEO of Encellin, proposed using “living cells” in treatment. During laboratory studies, the test subjects received a semipermeable pouch under the skin, with a membrane that protected the cells from rejection. Based on previous unsuccessful trials, the scientists decided to enclose the living cells in an elastic membrane: insulin and glucose can pass through it, while no adverse immune response is observed. Crystal Nyitray explains this using a simple example: “An elastic membrane is like a mosquito net: it lets fresh air through but prevents insects from entering.”

Crystal Nyitray began developing her theory while she was still a graduate student at the University of California. At that time, she shared the new idea with her academic adviser, bioengineering professor Tejal Desai. Despite her extensive experience in researching and developing synthetic cell coatings, the adviser discouraged the student, as it was extremely difficult to create a membrane in which cells could survive without being rejected by the body’s immune system.

Despite the lack of support, Nyitray continued working in this field. As a result of her experiments, she achieved success and changed her adviser’s mind. Desai noted that she changed her opinion after seeing evidence that the test subject’s body did not reject the elastic membrane containing the living cells.

Based on laboratory experiments involving animals, Nyitray was able to demonstrate that the new method works. She therefore created the innovative Encellin project with the aim of eventually applying the technology in medical practice.

In addition to Nyitray, scientists at ViaCyte in San Diego are working on the theory of “implanting living cells.” Instead of an elastic membrane, the researchers use a porous gel. However, as with Encellin, clinical trials involving patients have not been conducted.

At present, there is still no evidence that Crystal Nyitray’s method will be successful. She is supported by many scientists, including Alice Tomei, director of the Immunology Laboratory at the University of Miami. The new method of treating diabetes can be used only after successful clinical trials involving patients.

On 26 November, a series of events will be held in Moscow to inform the public about the causes of diabetes mellitus, as well as its main symptoms and treatment methods.

The public event is being held in connection with World Diabetes Day, established by the WHO and the International Diabetes Federation in the early 1990s. Today, diabetes poses a serious threat to the health of the population of the Russian Federation—among the leading causes of death, it is surpassed only by cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Several public initiatives are planned as part of the event to provide information for people living with this challenging diagnosis:

Talks and presentations by physicians and psychologists on popular topics: “Diabetes During Pregnancy,” “Psychology and Diabetes in Children,” “Psychological Support for Parents of Children with Diabetes,” “Type 1 Diabetes in Adolescents,” “Practical Aspects of Insulin Administration Methods,” “Insulin Pump Therapy” and “Healthy Eating”;

Creative activities and introductory lessons for children in a play-based format.

The main objective is to provide information about diabetes mellitus and dispel the myths and misconceptions associated with it. This event is being held in our country for the second time. We want to demonstrate that, by following certain rules, people with diabetes can not only live fulfilling lives, but also pursue their dreams and achieve their goals.

Last year’s event generated considerable interest among people with diabetes, as well as their relatives and friends. More than 600,000 people took part. The promotional campaign was held in Krasnodar, St Petersburg and Moscow.

A round table was held in Saransk on 29 September 2017, attended by endocrinologists from the Republic of Mordovia and the chief freelance endocrinologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic. The round table focused on one of the most relevant topics for physicians in this specialty: “Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and the Blood Glucose Monitoring System.”

ETALON Company took part in the 7th Forum of Endocrinologists of Kuban, attended by representatives of Russia’s Southern Federal District.

The forum’s theme was “Innovations in Endocrinology: Key Issues in the Prevention and Treatment of Endocrine Disorders.”

The event took place over two days, from 27 to 28 October 2017, in Krasnodar at Regional Clinical Hospital No. 2.

Dedicated to improving the qualifications of Russian endocrinologists, the forum enabled practicing physicians in the regions to learn about the latest innovations and exchange invaluable experience with their colleagues. Invited professors presented the most relevant topics from well-known Moscow congresses and conferences. The speakers complemented their lectures with unconventional presentations and informative video materials.

As is customary, the organizers held an exhibition of modern medicines and medical devices as part of the forum. Since endocrinologists and patients in Kuban have actively used our Company’s products since 2013, we presented our devices for measuring blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels: the MultiCare-in rapid analyzer, the iCheck blood glucose meter and all related consumables.

From 19 to 21 April 2017, Moscow hosted the 11th Nationwide Forum “The Health of the Nation Is the Foundation of Russia’s Prosperity” at the Gostiny Dvor Exhibition Complex, located at 4 Ilyinka Street.

The forum was organized by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation together with the League of the Nation’s Health.

This year, the exhibition held as part of the forum presented the best regional and sector-specific practices for creating conditions conducive to a healthy lifestyle, organizing meaningful leisure activities, and engaging in physical education and sports. Approximately 1,000 people from 23 regions took part in the exhibition.

With the support of the Zdorovye Medical Center, our ETALON Company conducted glucose and total cholesterol screening for forum visitors and participants using the SD-Lipidocare rapid analyzer as part of efforts to combat diabetes and identify cardiovascular diseases.

The exhibition addressed and discussed important issues, therapeutic strategies and preventive medicine methods aimed at overcoming the “number one disease.” Renowned experts, physicians, dietitians and preventive medicine specialists took part in the discussions and exchanged experience.

Our company managers actively held negotiations with representatives of regional Ministries of Health and healthcare institutions, who, in turn, expressed interest in our products.

For the global community, 20 October 2017 was an anniversary date, as 20 years earlier, on this day, the World Health Organization declared 20 October World Osteoporosis Day. According to the WHO, osteoporosis ranks fourth worldwide in terms of prevalence, after cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes mellitus.

World Osteoporosis Day in Dmitrov was marked by a series of dynamic events. Alongside the usual format for such occasions—a research and practical conference—the organizers held an open health school for the public, where everyone could learn Nordic walking.

The event, held at the Raduga Children’s Creativity Center, was organized jointly by the Administration of Dmitrov District, the Department for Coordination of Medical and Pharmaceutical Organizations No. 11 and Dmitrov City Hospital, at the initiative and with the support of the Moscow Regional Center for Medical Prevention.

The Raduga Children’s Creativity Center brought together not only healthcare workers attending the research and practical conference, but also local residents who had learned about the event from various sources. With the support of the Russian company ETALON, a blood cholesterol screening station was set up. The screening was conducted by students of Dmitrov Medical College. Cholesterol levels were measured using the portable MultiCare-in rapid analyzer.

The day’s events included an award ceremony for the winners of a children’s drawing contest held under the motto “Healthy Childhood—Healthy Future for Bones,” as well as a recipe competition featuring healthy and delicious dishes that can help prevent osteoporosis.

A group of students from Dmitrov Fisheries and Technology Institute also received a special prize from the Russian company ETALON for their collaborative creative approach to developing a comprehensive menu for people with osteoporosis.

The dance flash mob “WE ARE THE BEST!”, organized by young volunteers from Dmitrov Gymnasium, lifted everyone’s spirits. The event concluded with the ceremonial signing of an agreement to open a Nordic walking school in Dmitrov by Elena Troshenkova, Head of Dmitrov District, and renowned figure skater and multiple world champion Irina Slutskaya.

From 1 to 4 March 2017, the 3rd Nationwide Endocrinology Congress with international participation, “Innovative Technologies in Endocrinology,” was held at the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

The congress was accompanied by an exhibition of leading Russian and international medical manufacturers. As is customary, our ETALON Company took part in the exhibition as an exhibitor.

World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14. The date coincides with the birthday of the renowned physiologist Frederick Grant Banting, who, together with other scientists, discovered insulin.

Currently, the global prevalence of diabetes is very high — 8%, meaning more than 400 million people. Every year, this condition causes 1.5 million deaths. In our country, the number of people with type 2 diabetes increases by 6% each year, and according to sobering forecasts, by 2030 their number will reach 15 million. In 2015, such a diagnosis was given to 4 million Russians. According to data from the Ministry of Health, over 15 years the number of patients with this diagnosis increased by 2 million — that is 365 people per day, or 15 per hour.

Diabetes is a fairly common disease that leads to disability and mortality, alongside cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, there are still a huge number of prejudices and myths associated with diabetes.

1. Frequent consumption of sugar‑containing products leads to the development of diabetes.

2. Most people believe that the cause of the disease lies in its name. This statement is not entirely correct, since a

love of sweets does not always lead to the development of the disease.

Nevertheless, consuming foods high in sugar contributes to the development of

obesity, and such people are more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. Type 1

diabetes can develop in people with a genetic predisposition.

3. People who are obese will inevitably get the disease, while thin people are not at risk.

4. Indeed, a sedentary lifestyle and excess weight increase the risk of developing the disease, but people with a normal body type also suffer from diabetes.

Factors that contribute to the development of the disease include genetic

predisposition, age, and stress.

5. Diabetes is contagious.

6. Diabetes is not a viral or infectious disease, so it is impossible to become infected through contact with a sick person.

7. Diabetes is inherited.

8. A predisposition to diabetes is inherited, but with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle, one may never develop the disease. The risk of developing type 1 diabetes when both

parents are affected is 25–30%, and 60–70% if they have type 2 diabetes. In

cases where only one parent is affected, the probability of the disease

decreases.

9. People without a genetic predisposition can also get the disease — diabetes can result from excessive consumption of fatty foods and an unhealthy lifestyle.

10. A person will realize they have diabetes because they will feel unwell.

11. Diabetes is not characterized by pronounced symptoms; in most cases, a person may be unaware of their diagnosis. Doctors strongly recommend undergoing regular

medical check‑ups and blood tests.

12. Dry mouth, frequent urination, and chronic fatigue are the main signs of diabetes. In

such cases, it is necessary to check blood sugar levels. Normal values are

3.3–5.5 mmol/L fasting and 7.8 mmol/L after a meal.

13. Diabetes will lead to disability or death.

14. Diabetes is a fairly dangerous disease and is associated with complications. Today,

thanks to advances in medicine and the availability of glucometers (modern

portable devices for measuring blood sugar), it is possible to monitor and

adjust glucose levels, thereby avoiding complications.

15. People with diabetes cannot eat sweets.

16. The daily diet of patients with type 1 diabetes is identical to that of a healthy person; the main thing is to follow the rules of insulin therapy and count calories.

17. People with type 2 diabetes need to be stricter about food — consume limited amounts of fatty foods and exclude sugar‑containing products.

18. Honey and fruits can be eaten in unlimited quantities.

19. This is a misconception — honey contains fructose, which raises blood glucose levels, and fruits contain a large amount of carbohydrates, which also provoke an increase in blood sugar.

Therefore, patients need to be more attentive to their diet.

At some point in every person’s life, thoughts about aging arise. For some, aging is associated with the onset of diseases typical of old age; for others, with a decline in mental and physical performance; for still others, with the loss of a social role in the family and society. What does the aging process represent? Which factors accelerate and slow it down? How can one influence the aging of the body in the presence of diabetes mellitus? We will try to answer these questions today.

The science of aging — gerontology — views aging as a time‑extended process and an integral part of the program of individual human development. In developed countries, the number of elderly (60–74 years) and old (75–90 years) people, as well as long‑livers (over 90 years), is growing year by year. According to leading gerontologists, as reflected in the UN Program on Aging Research in the 21st Century, studying the aging process is not only of theoretical interest but will also help treat diseases of elderly and old people more effectively, increase their life expectancy, and improve its quality.

It has been established that the rate of the aging process of the body as a whole is not the same at different periods of a person’s life; moreover, different organs and systems age at different speeds. Most experts agree that the body of a healthy person reaches optimal parameters of development and function by the age of 25, and from the age of 35 the aging process gains momentum, manifesting as a decline in the body’s capabilities.

Is there a single cause of aging? The answer to this question is negative. Gerontologists have put forward several hundred theories of aging. Many scientists view aging as the result of “accumulation of errors” — irreversible damage to cells over the course of life. One of the most developed such theories is the free‑radical theory.

Free radicals are active chemical particles capable of destroying the normal molecules of our cells. Free radicals are formed in small quantities as an inevitable “by‑product” of metabolism. The level of free radicals increases significantly when the body is exposed to radiation, ultraviolet radiation, toxic substances, as well as in many diseases, including diabetes mellitus.

But our cells are not defenseless against the harmful effects of free radicals: they are neutralized by the antioxidant system. With age, however, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the content of natural antioxidants in the body decrease. At the same time, the use of antioxidants increases the life expectancy of laboratory animals. A clear example of combating age‑related changes in humans with the help of antioxidants is modern cosmetic products enriched with antioxidant components that protect the skin from free radicals under the influence of the ultraviolet part of sunlight.

The theory of aging due to glycation is also confirmed. Glycation is the irreversible binding of proteins in our cells with glucose. It occurs at a low rate in the bodies of healthy individuals, but in hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus, it is greatly intensified.

It is sufficient to recall the well‑known glycated hemoglobin, which reflects the average blood glucose level over a period of about 3 months. In a healthy person, its level does not exceed 5%, while in diabetes mellitus it can reach 10–15%. It has been established that even in people without diabetes, the level of such modified “sugar‑coated” proteins increases with age. In diabetes mellitus, glycation disrupts the normal functioning of proteins and often leads to complications — damage to blood vessels and nerves, and clouding of the lens.

With age, hormonal changes also occur in the human body. A typical companion of aging is a decrease in the amount of sex hormones — estrogens and androgens — as well as a deterioration in the biological action of insulin, which regulates, without exaggeration, all aspects of metabolism.

Against this background, the use of carbohydrates by cells decreases, the proportion of fat in the human body increases, especially in the abdominal area. Starting as early as 20–30 years of age, blood cholesterol levels rise, which increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis. The combination of these metabolic disturbances is usually accompanied by an increase in blood pressure and has received the name “metabolic syndrome.”

In metabolic syndrome, the pancreas begins to produce more insulin to prevent an increase in blood glucose levels. When this mechanism is disrupted, type 2 diabetes mellitus develops — a disease that affects people predominantly in the second half of life.

From this, it is clear that aging and diabetes mellitus are closely related: on the one hand, as a person’s age increases, the incidence of diabetes rises; on the other hand, metabolic disturbances in diabetes accelerate the aging of the body.

However, it is obvious that people of the same birth year can differ very significantly in the degree of age‑related changes. In other words, a person’s chronological age does not always reflect the rate of aging. In this regard, the concept of “biological age” was introduced in gerontology.

Measuring biological age allows one to identify an individual “portrait” of age‑related changes in the human body and outline measures to combat them. Scientists began working on this problem more than 70 years ago and have already proposed several dozen methods for determining biological age. Based on the comparison of biological and chronological age, one can judge the pace of aging of the human body.

If biological age is significantly greater than chronological age, we speak of accelerated aging.

· If it is lower, we speak of slowed aging.

· When the two correspond, aging is called physiological.

It should be noted that the value of biological age characterizes the state of the body at the present time and in no way determines the length of future life.

At our endocrinology clinic and the Laboratory of Pathophysiology of Aging at the Hospital for War Veterans, during the period 2001–2005, about 300 patients with diabetes mellitus were examined. All of them underwent laboratory blood tests, and their biological age was determined using a methodology proposed by the Kyiv Research Institute of Gerontology — the leading scientific institution on the problem of aging in the territory of the former USSR.

We found that the biological age of patients with diabetes mellitus often differed from their chronological age: about 50% of patients had an accelerated rate of aging, and the maximum deviation of biological age from chronological age reached 30 years. Such significantly elevated indicators had previously been observed in veterans of armed conflicts who were treated at the hospital.



We studied in detail the indicators of metabolism that are impaired in diabetes mellitus and established that poor compensation of the disease plays a leading role in accelerating the aging of the body.

In diabetic patients with an accelerated rate of aging, in most cases a high level of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and glycated proteins was determined; signs of increased formation of free radicals were significantly more common, and blood lipid levels were somewhat above normal.

These disturbances were most pronounced in relatively young people — aged 35–50 years — and they also showed the greatest deviation of biological age from chronological age. It should be noted that diabetic patients with an accelerated rate of aging had a significant excess body weight, while in those with a slowed rate of aging, weight only slightly exceeded the norm.

The contribution of diabetes “duration” and complications to the increase in biological age turned out to be less than expected. These data show how important it is for a patient with diabetes mellitus, in cooperation with the treating physician, to fight the disease and achieve normalization of metabolism — that is, compensation of the disease.



Modern gerontology can influence the speed of the aging process through targeted measures: both by taking medications and by non‑pharmacological methods.

Medications that slow down the aging process and extend the life of laboratory animals are diverse: antioxidants (for example, vitamins A, C, E), stimulants of energy metabolism and immunity, vitamins, some hormones, and detoxification drugs.

Special mention deserves the presence of these properties in antidiabetic drugs from the biguanide group (in endocrinology, one of them is now widely used — metformin). All the listed groups of drugs are used in medicine according to indications for use. However, none of these drugs has yet proven the ability to slow down the aging of the human body, and there are currently no grounds to recommend their use specifically for this purpose.



Non‑pharmacological interventions can have no less significant impact on the rate of aging. The most effective of them — caloric restriction — can increase the life expectancy of experimental animals by up to 1.5 times.

At present, a long‑term study of this method is ongoing in the United States in a group of healthy volunteers, and it has already been established that their metabolic parameters are approaching the “ideal” values of young people.

In our Hospital for War Veterans, the ability of hyperbaric oxygenation and “dry” carbon dioxide baths to reduce the biological age of the body has been identified; indications and contraindications for these methods and optimal treatment regimens have been determined.

Our examination of patients with diabetes mellitus demonstrated similar activity in preparations of lipoic (thioctic) acid, widely used in endocrinology for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.


We would like to conclude the discussion on the relationship between diabetes mellitus and aging with brief recommendations from leading gerontologists. Thus, in order to slow down the development of age‑related changes, one should:

• Maintain a rational work–rest schedule, allocating sufficient time for sleep, including daytime rest, as well as for feasible daily physical exercises.
• Avoid overeating; nutrition may be moderately low in calories but must be balanced in terms of the ratio of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and contain products rich in fiber.
• Treat stress situations reasonably, quickly switching from negative emotions to positive ones.
• Spend as much time as possible in an environmentally clean area.
• Avoid chronic intoxications, including smoking and alcohol abuse.
• Monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.
• Properly treat existing chronic diseases, and in diabetes mellitus — strive to achieve its compensation.
• For preventive purposes, take courses of multivitamin preparations with antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E, the trace elements selenium and zinc), especially during periods of seasonal deficiency (winter–spring), as well as during periods of intense physical or mental stress.

Until recently, diabetes mellitus was considered one of the main causes of cardiovascular system dysfunction. As the disease progresses, various complications arise — arterial, cardiac, and cerebral.

According to recent global studies, the number of people with diabetes is growing every year. For example, in France, almost 3 million people suffer from this disease. At the same time, 90% of them are patients with type 2 diabetes. It is worth emphasizing that almost all patients may be unaware of their diagnosis. Therefore, the biggest problem is the absence of visible symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

Ten million people with this diagnosis suffer from abdominal obesity, which is why people who are overweight are at risk. It should be noted that in type 2 diabetics, cardiovascular diseases develop more often.

According to statistical data collected from around the world, ten countries with the highest incidence can be identified:

• China — the number of patients is almost 100 million people;
• India — 65 million people;
• USA — 24.4 million people;
• Brazil — 12 million people;
• Russia — 11 million people;
• Mexico and Indonesia — 8.5 million people;
• Germany and Egypt — 7.5 million people;
• Japan — 7 million people.

This information further proves that the number of patients is continuously increasing every year.

An unfavorable factor is the rise in childhood incidence. Previously, type 2 diabetes in children was quite rare, but today pathological abnormalities can be detected at a younger age.

In 2016, the WHO presented material showing the trend in the development of diabetes worldwide:

• In the 1980s, the number of patients was 108 million; during this period, their number increased significantly and by 2014 amounted to 422 million;
• The incidence rate in the adult population doubled;
• According to 2012 data, 3 million people died from complications associated with type 1 and type 2 diabetes;
• Mortality rates in countries with a low social level are significantly higher.

In Russia, diabetes is diagnosed more and more often. The fact that the country is a leader in the list of countries with a large number of patients is also discouraging.

Experts in the field of diabetes diagnostics state that most patients are unaware of health impairments and the presence of any pathologies. Thus, the true incidence rates may be twice as high.

In our country, 300,000 patients suffer from type 1 diabetes. Such patients need to inject insulin daily and monitor their blood glucose levels. Strict adherence to rules, an active lifestyle, and proper nutrition with this diagnosis are the key to health.

In the Russian Federation, 30% of financial funds from the state budget are allocated for the treatment of patients with diabetes.

Due to the absence of symptoms, type 2 diabetes (in the early stages) is diagnosed by chance — most often it is detected during a routine medical examination or during treatment for other diseases.

Insulin‑dependent diabetes occurs in 10% of patients with this diagnosis. Children or adolescents who have a hereditary predisposition are at risk.

With timely diagnosis, a patient can live to an advanced age. At the same time, the key to normal health is adherence to the doctor’s recommendations.

In the human body, in every single cell, complex chemical transformations are constantly taking place: some substances are formed, others are broken down. The conversion of food into energy and heat is one of the most important processes. Metabolism is the process that transforms food into energy for muscle work, heat production, and the renewal or repair of billions of cells. Digestion means the breakdown of food into simple nutrients. The pancreas secretes enzymes into the intestine, which act as auxiliary elements in the process of food digestion. When nutrients reach the required size, they enter the blood vessels. In this way, nutrients reach the cells of our body.

Insulin is the main hormone regulating carbohydrate metabolism in the body. It is produced by the pancreas and helps food substances (in this case, glucose) enter the cells. Glucose is the main source of energy for all cells of the body, especially for muscle and nerve cells. Insulin enters the bloodstream and then binds to the surface of cells. When insulin is on the cell surface, glucose can freely pass from the blood into the cell. Afterwards, food substances are transformed into energy, or they are stored inside the cell as energy reserves. Insulin, as an auxiliary element for converting glucose into energy, increases when we consume food and blood sugar levels rise. Thus, even a large amount of sugar is quickly absorbed by the body.

Correctly coding a glucometer is very important, as it affects the accuracy of the measurement and, consequently, the choice of the correct medication dose. The first coding method is manual. Each time the device is turned on, the user is prompted to enter a combination of numbers indicated on the test strip packaging. The second method is much simpler. In each tube of test strips there is a coding chip, which should be inserted into the glucometer before measurement; it then automatically performs the coding.

There are also glucometers without coding, but unfortunately, in this case accuracy decreases and medication dosing becomes inaccurate.

In terms of this parameter, most modern glucometers are similar. They provide a result within 5–10 seconds. However, there are also glucometers that require 20–30 seconds.

Often, the treating physician needs a large volume of results for proper treatment adjustment. Now there is no need to remember or write down the results; you can forget about this completely. Modern glucometers will do this for you. They can also show you the average result over 7, 14, 21, or 28 days.

The main indicator of measurement comfort is the required blood volume. Modern manufacturers strive to make this value as small as possible without loss of accuracy. Depending on the model, it ranges from 0.7 to 2 µL.

The cost of modern devices ranges from 1,000 to 2,500 rubles. But this amount is spent only once, whereas consumables must be purchased continuously. Therefore, close attention should be paid to the cost of test strips for the device and of lancets. And here, prices from different manufacturers begin to differ significantly.

Pay attention to the device warranty as well. Usually, 6–10 years is enough for the device to prove its worth. But some manufacturers confidently offer a lifetime warranty.

The main outflow of money is due to the purchase of test strips. But there is another important parameter that many do not mention. These are lancets for pricking.

To avoid infecting a patient with diabetes and to protect against unpleasant diseases, hygiene during measurement must be observed.

Lancets play an important role here; a new lancing device should be used each time. On the Russian market, only one manufacturer of consumables under the iCheck brand includes an equivalent number of lancets in the test strip packaging.

From May 26 to 29, 2026, at the CWT Congress Center, a landmark event for Russia’s medical community took place — the XI National Congress of Endocrinologists with international participation. Organized by the Russian Association of Endocrinologists with the support of the Ministry of Health of Russia and the Federal State Budgetary Institution “National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology named after Academician I.I. Dedov,” the congress served as a platform for in‑depth discussion of current problems and promising directions in endocrinology.

In Russia, the situation is also cause for concern: as of early 2026, the number of patients with diabetes approached 6 million. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova has repeatedly expressed concern about the upward trend in incidence, warning of a possible epidemic. In response to these challenges, since 2023 the Federal Project “Combating Diabetes Mellitus” has been implemented, creating a three‑level system of care, including regional and inter‑district centers, as well as schools for patients.

The All‑Russian Forum “Health of the Nation — the Foundation of Russia’s Prosperity” was held again in Moscow, with the team of the Russian company “ETALON” taking part. At Gostiny Dvor, renowned scientists, physicians, experts, representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, public organizations, and business gathered to discuss the most pressing healthcare issues. This time, the main theme of the forum was the protection and strengthening of the health of the population of the Russian Federation in the face of challenges posed by new infectious diseases. Due to the coronavirus, the forum’s opening was postponed several times, but it finally took place.

In 2020, the entire world came face to face with a new enemy, the confrontation with which is now forever inscribed in human history. And it was precisely healthcare workers who became the heroes of our time. Despite the risks, they stood up to protect people’s health and well‑being. Today, the first results of the fight against the Covid‑19 virus have already been summarized. The “Health of the Nation” forum was organized, above all, to exchange experience and develop a common strategy for exiting the pandemic and the crisis situation. Key events of the exhibition were dedicated to current and important issues of public health protection, prevention and diagnosis, and effective forms and models of interaction among different segments of society during an extraordinary epidemiological situation. The event was organized by the All‑Russian Public Organization “League of Health of the Nation” and the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

The forum was opened by the President of the All‑Russian Public Organization “League of Health of the Nation,” Academician Leo Bokeria, who later visited the booth of the Russian company “ETALON.”

“Our next forum is taking place in a very difficult period, when the entire world and our country are undergoing a very serious test of the system for ensuring the safety and health of citizens in the fight against the new coronavirus infection, which poses a danger to virtually everyone who encounters it.
